Watch this photography tutorial video to learn how to photograph historic images.

The time to shoot historical photographs is now. When we view images created in the past, there are often elements in those images that relate to a particular time period. Many things around us may seem to be ordinary today, however these things will have historic significance in the near future. Have you seen the first generation iPod? That thing looks pre-historic already.

What elements in the image will have historic meaning:

Fashion, cars, and technology change so rapidly that in 20 years from now, you will not believe that some of the things will evolve from being cutting edge to a distant testimony of the past.

Coney Island in Brooklyn New York is a historic landmark. During the first half of the 20th century, it was a happening place. At a time when commercial air travel was not yet affordable, most people spent their vacations locally. The Coney Island beach was one of the most beloved destinations for New Yorkers and visiting tourists alike. Around the 1960’s, Coney Island started to experience a downfall.

In the early 1990’s (when I arrived to the neighborhood) it was quite ran down and somewhat of a dangerous place, fascinating nonetheless. Today, Coney Island is making a comeback. It’s full of life and the number of people visiting the area is getting closer to the peak it had in the 1920’s - 1940’s. Honestly, it was quite shocking for me to witness thousands of people in the place that was nearly dead not so long ago. As a photographer, I felt an obligation to capture the thriving life that has return to Coney Island. One day, perhaps 100 years from now, someone will look at my images and might appreciate it as a treasured reference to the current time period.
