I was in college bouncing around between courses trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Then one day a friend of mine put a darkroom in his basement. I witnessed the magic of image making and was transformed. I had never thought of photography being a career before. My college had only one photography course and I enrolled the next semester. One of the first assignments was to backlight an object. Well I took a clamp lamp and aimed it at the back of the object straight at the camera. That didn't work. It created flare in the lens and a harsh shadow in the foreground. My friend came by and helped me out. He pointed out the correct technique, which was to aim the light at the background, not at the subject. I was amazed that a simple lighting technique made such a visual difference. In our video on backlighting I show you how easy it is to get great results using our clamp lamp lighting. By bouncing the light off a black background you can achieve many different effects and be very creative and get a beautiful image. And using the drafting tissue as diffusion for your front light is really effective. Using you digital SLR camera on an automatic mode makes things easier. There's a lot of information in this photography tutorial, so take it step by step and you will create a beautiful image of your own.
