Back in college, when I took my first photography course, a self-portrait was the very first assignment given by our professor. It was a great experience. The experience helped me to understand how a model would feel when photographed by me. Before one can give direction to someone else, it is important to learn how to direct oneself. When you are just starting to photograph people, the patience of the model runs out 5 times faster than that of a photographer. Everyone has a potential of being a great actor and when an acting experience is intimate and without any pressure it will become much easier to develop that part of your talent as well.
